Why proper soil prep matters in Calgary
Most failed sod jobs in Calgary aren’t failed sod — they’re failed soil prep. Builders typically leave new yards with thin, compacted clay topped by a sliver of poor-quality soil. Roll fresh sod onto that, water it for two weeks, and you’ll watch it brown out the moment summer hits.
We treat soil prep as the most important step. That means correcting any grade issues so water drains away from the house, adding 2–4″ of quality black loam, breaking up compaction, and creating a smooth, slightly firm surface for the sod to root into. Done right, your lawn will be thriving five years from now — not just five weeks.
Local Calgary sod, cut fresh
We source our sod from established Alberta growers who specialize in Kentucky bluegrass blends bred for Prairie conditions. Sod is cut within 24 hours of installation and rolled out the same day — never sitting on a pallet baking in the sun.
For Calgary front yards we recommend a hardier blend that handles south-facing exposure and alkaline water; for shaded backyards we use a blend with a higher fescue percentage that tolerates lower light.
A typical sod install day
Most residential sod installs in Calgary are completed in a single day. We arrive early, strip out old turf and weeds, correct grade, deliver topsoil, fine-grade and lightly roll, then begin laying sod from the back of the property toward the front.
Seams are staggered like brickwork and pressed tight together to prevent gaps. Once everything is laid, we trim edges along beds and walks, do a final roll to ensure full soil contact, give the lawn its first deep watering and walk you through your aftercare schedule before we leave.
Watering & aftercare — the make-or-break stage
Newly-laid sod has no root system yet, so it depends entirely on you for water during the first 2–3 weeks. In Calgary’s dry summer that usually means watering 2–3 times per day for the first week, then tapering as roots establish.

When to install sod in Calgary
In Calgary, the best windows for sod installation are mid-May through late June, and again from late August through mid-October. These windows offer warm soil, cool nights and reasonable rainfall — ideal conditions for rooting.
We can install through the heat of July and early August, but watering becomes critical and a maintenance package is strongly recommended. We do not install once nighttime temperatures stay below freezing.
