Why Calgary lawns need a local approach
Calgary sits in a unique micro-climate. Long, dry summers, alkaline tap water, hard clay soils and sudden chinooks all stress turf in ways that aren’t a problem in other Canadian cities. A “standard” lawn program from a national chain often misses the mark here — too much nitrogen too early, the wrong grass mix for our short growing window, or mowing too short going into a hot July.
Our crews live and work in Calgary, and we’ve tuned every part of our lawn care program for the way grass actually grows here. We mow taller in mid-summer to shade the soil and lock in moisture, time fertilization around our shorter season, and choose products that work with Calgary’s hard water rather than against it.
A proper Calgary lawn care schedule
A good lawn care plan is more than just mowing. We typically start in late April or early May with a power-rake and clean-up to remove winter debris and matted thatch, then begin regular mowing once the grass is actively growing. By mid-May, we’re into a full mow-and-edge rotation, and we layer in fertilization, weed control and aeration at the right windows.
Through July and August — Calgary’s driest stretch — we adjust mowing height and frequency so the lawn stays healthy without burning out. In September and early October, we apply a fall fertilizer to build root reserves for winter, and we finish the season with a fall cleanup that removes leaves and debris before snowfall.
Mowing done the right way
It sounds simple, but the way a lawn is mowed has more impact than almost any other factor. Our crews use sharp blades on every visit (dull blades shred grass and invite disease), keep mowing height in the 3–3.5″ range during summer to shade roots, and alternate mowing patterns so the turf doesn’t lean.
We also follow the “one-third rule” — never removing more than a third of the grass blade in a single cut. That keeps the lawn green between visits and reduces stress during hot weeks.
Fertilization & weed control
Our standard Calgary lawn program includes three fertilizer applications per year: a spring green-up, a summer feed and a fall root-builder. Each is timed around real weather, not a calendar — so if Calgary gets a late spring or an early frost, your lawn still gets fed at the right moment.
For weeds, we focus on spot-treating dandelions, clover and thistle rather than blanket-spraying. That keeps your lawn looking great while minimizing product use, which is better for pets, kids and the environment.
Aeration, overseeding & lawn repair
Calgary’s clay soils get compacted quickly, especially on newer builds where construction equipment has run over the yard. Annual core aeration breaks up that compaction, lets air, water and nutrients reach the roots, and dramatically improves turf health.
We recommend pairing aeration with overseeding using a Calgary-appropriate Kentucky bluegrass / fescue blend. Together, they thicken thin lawns and crowd out weeds naturally over a couple of seasons. For badly damaged lawns, we also offer sod installation — see our [sod installation page](/services/sod-installation-calgary/) for details.
