Why mulch & rock beds make sense in Calgary

Calgary’s wind, hail, alkaline water and short growing season are tough on traditional flower beds. Decorative rock and mulch beds are dramatically lower maintenance: less watering, far fewer weeds, and a clean, finished look that holds up year after year.

Done well, a mulch or rock install can completely change the curb appeal of your home in a single day — and pay for itself many times over in saved weekend hours.

Rock vs. mulch — which is right for your yard?

Rock (river stone, decorative rock, pea gravel) is essentially permanent. Once installed it doesn’t blow away, doesn’t need topping up, and creates a crisp modern look that pairs well with newer Calgary builds. Downsides: heavier upfront cost, harder to change later, and traps heat in summer (so plant choice matters).

Cedar mulch is more affordable, insulates plant roots, and adds organic matter as it breaks down. It does need topping up every 2–3 years and can blow around in heavy Calgary winds without proper edging. We often recommend mulch in plant-heavy beds and rock in low-plant feature areas.

Edging makes or breaks the install

Good edging is what separates a finished landscape from a mess. We install proper steel, paver-stone or commercial poly edging between your rock/mulch beds and lawn so the materials don’t migrate, mowing is easy, and the lines stay sharp for years.

For curb-appeal projects we strongly recommend powder-coated steel edging — it disappears visually, won’t heave with frost, and gives the cleanest possible line.

Materials we install

We work with all the popular Calgary materials: 1.5″ river rock, 3–6″ Rundle stone, white marble chips, pea gravel, washed gravel, decorative red rock, and a full range of cedar mulch options. Black, brown and natural-colour mulches are all available.

Mulch & Rock Installation — frequently asked questions

How deep should mulch or rock be installed?+

For mulch, 2–3 inches is ideal — deep enough to suppress weeds and retain moisture, shallow enough not to suffocate plant roots. For decorative rock, 2 inches over commercial-grade fabric is typical for visual coverage and weed control.

Will mulch attract pests or insects?+

Quality cedar mulch actually repels many insects and is one of the better options in Calgary. We avoid using untreated wood waste or recycled pallet mulch, both of which can attract issues.

How often does mulch need to be topped up?+

In Calgary, most cedar mulch beds benefit from a refresh every 2–3 years. Decorative rock generally lasts indefinitely with only occasional rinsing or weed pulling.

Can you remove my old mulch or rock first?+

Yes, we routinely remove old material — including old fabric — before installing new. Removal is priced separately and depends on volume.

Do I need landscape fabric under rock?+

For decorative rock, yes — quality commercial fabric is essential to keep the rock from sinking into the soil and to suppress weeds. Under mulch, fabric is optional and sometimes counterproductive in plant-heavy beds.
